Sommer der Besetzungen – Ein Aufruf von LeipzigBesetzen

+++english version below+++

How-To: Haus besetzen in 10 Schritten

1. Freund*innen, Genoss*innen, Arbeitskolleg*innen und Mitschüler*innen ansprechen; Vernetzung starten/organisieren.
10. Ein neuer Freiraum ist entstanden.

Summer of Occupations – An appeal by LeipzigBesetzen

Last year in Leipzig, Ludwigstraße 71 and Bornaische Straße 34 were squatted and several houses were sham squatted – including a house in Neustädter Straße, several houses in the west of Leipzig and Bornaische Straße 68. We resisted the prevailing housing policy with direct action. An uncommercial space was created in the case of Luwi71, even if only for a short time. Our occupation reached a broad public and was the topic of conversation in our neighbourhoods and the press for many days. Through their support and actions, many people took their anger at the rental conditions in Leipzig to the streets. The police also showed through evictions and large-scale operations who they are working for: not for the people, but for the law and capital in the form of enforcing the interests of the owners.

We have seen that left politics could be self-confident and capable of action in 2020. We have seen that through all these actions the public discourse could be significantly influenced. We also saw that many people in Leipzig supported actions, camped out for days and nights in solidarity in front of the Luwi71, organised their own squats, were active on the Day X demonstration or were simply secretly happy. Squatting is therefore an effective political means of protesting against rent madness and gentrification – also in Leipzig. Besides, how else are we supposed to deal with the fact that month after month more and more subcultural centres get stressed, close down or are evicted, as in the case of the Berlin Meuterei, the Liebig34 or the Rigaer94?

But in many cities, like Dresden, Weimar, Berlin, Essen and Bremen, there have been new squats over the last year. We think that’s pretty great!
Therefore: get involved in the summer of occupations! We ourselves want to start new actions and build on the successes of Luwi71. We want to invite you to make it difficult for the real estate companies to continue speculating, ripping off rents and building new houses and luxury renovations in Leipzig. Let’s work together for a city for all and solidary neighbourhoods through direct action!

LeipzigBesetzen sees itself as a platform for all groups in Leipzig who want to carry out actions against rent madness, empty flats, etc. We are happy to make our reach available to you in the form of our Twitter account and press distribution list. Of course, you don’t have to become active in our group in this context – set up your own and carry out your own actions! We are happy to support you. This summer should be marked by decentralised and coordinated actions to draw attention to the gentrified housing and living situation in our neighbourhoods and to fight for new free spaces! Now a few lines about repression and occupations. From a legal point of view, people are committing a criminal offence: trespassing. This is usually avenged with fines/social hours and more often: the case is dropped. Of course, it’s even more effective if you don’t get caught by the cops 😉 Of course, we are not calling on anyone to commit crimes here, but we do find occupations extremely charming.

Finally, we have prepared a short “How-To: Squatting” for you. In our opinion, these contain the most important points that need to be considered. Furthermore, we have linked you to a more comprehensive reader by comrades from Berlin.
If you want to get in touch with us, you can write to us at leipzigbesetzen@riseup.net. You can find our pgp-key on our blog (www.leipzigbesetzen.noblogs.org) or you can get it on request by mail.

How-to: Occupy a house in 10 steps
1. contact friends, comrades, colleagues and classmates; start organising/networking.
2. go through the streets and find an empty house.
3. inspect the house (dilapidated roof/staircase, mould/damp spots, sanitary facilities, electricity, …) and make sure that no other people are living in it.
4. choose a date for the occupation.
5. paint banners, possibly prepare texts and press releases, make sure that on the day of the occupation a broad public is behind it/notices it so that they can support it.
6. get sim cards already registered online or in small shops and cheap mobile phones to be able to communicate, and possibly a camera to document progress in and around the house.
7. sleeping gear, hygiene supplies, first aid supplies, candles, tools (saw, hammer, screwdriver), barricading materials (nails, screws, wooden boards, grids) if necessary and some food and water should not be missing in the house.
8. enter the house, barricade it, make sure there is screen and masking material, hang out the banners and make the occupation public!
9. wait for support, be happy about support and watch how it makes life difficult for the cops. Try to hold the house!
10. a new free space has been created.

Get involved in the summer of occupations! Get organised! Start actions, inform your neighbours about the housing situation, get active (together),…! Let’s take what is rightfully ours!

Greetings of solidarity,
LeipzigBesetzen
