#LeipzigBesetzen // Statement on the mock occupations //
The occupations of May 1st in Ludwigstraße & in Großzschocher in Leipzig were mock occupations. Due to the Corona crisis police repression and bans on larger solidarity demonstrations were to be expected. Therefore, the activists decided to choose this symbolic form of action to draw attention to the start of their campaign #LeipzigBesetzen and to release corresponding forces and energies.
To put it straight: Symbolic forms of action will not remain. The goal of the campaign is the actual creation of self-organized, non-commercial spaces through squatting.
Occupations are necessary because people are excluded from urban policy-making and their needs not realized by communal politics. Just as radically as the real estate industry is taking over the city, people will reclaim their lives in the city. With every occupation, the city’s decision-makers and the police can decide to take the interests of the people into account or to evict them, thus making themselves executors of a policy of repression.
The campaign #leipzigbesetzen sees itself as an actor of urban politics who is not only concerned with squatting houses, but about effectivly changing our life in this city. The activists of #leipzigbesetzen are therefore ready to enter into negotiations with the municipality and landlords and hope to be respected as equals without violence. In current times of pandemic, the realization of accessible and safe spaces is essential for being able to “stay home” and protect oneself and others. Staying home is feasible if you have a home.
